Volleyball falls to top-ranked UST

The St. Kate' volleyball team made the short trip along Cretin Avenue to take on the University of St. Thomas (UST). The Tommies entered the match ranked #6 in the nation in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association polls, and quickly demonstrated why they are the top ranked team in the conference.

The Wildcats lost the game in three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-16, 25-11.

Despite what the scoreboard says, the Wildcat coaching staff felt that this game was an incidence of the sets being closer than the scores would indicate. Set one was a perfect example of that. The Wildcats and Tommies were tied 5-5, 9-9, and the Wildcats only trailed by two (13-11) when UST put together a string of five straight points to put the game out of reach.

Set two followed a similar patter. The Wildcats trailed 9-8, but then were unable to sideout and UST scored seven striaght points. The 16-8 advatange was more than enough for the Tommies to cruise to a 25-16 win.

With victory in sight, UST came out of the gates strong in set three. Taking a 5-0 lead and continuing to extend it from there. Ultimately winning 25-11.

Megan Ahlbrecht and Maria Hoffman led the Wildcats with nine and six kills respectively.

The loss drops the Wildcats record to 6-10 overall, and 0-5 in MIAC play. UST is now 17-1 overall and 5-0 in MIAC play.

St. Kate's returns to action for another MIAC-ACTC battle on Wednesday October 8. This time the Wildcats head up Snelling Ave. to take on Macalester College. Play begins at 7pm.
